Infusion therapy: When it's truly beneficial — and when it's not

Vitamin infusions are trending in Zurich: drip bars, beauty IVs, hangover cocktails. The offering is large, the medical substance often thin. In our practice we clearly separate the iron infusion, a medical treatment, from the private vitamin or recovery infusion.

Iron infusion: a medical treatment

Oral iron supplements are not well tolerated by everyone (nausea, constipation). With a documented iron deficiency, an iron infusion (e.g. Ferinject or an equivalent product) can make sense, typically with ferritin below 30 µg/l and symptoms such as fatigue, hair loss or poor concentration. When it is medically indicated, it is covered by basic insurance. Recent lab values are required.

Vitamin and recovery infusion: a private service

A vitamin or recovery infusion contains vitamins, minerals, amino acids and antioxidants such as glutathione. It does not treat any disease, and we do not promise a particular effect. Before the first infusion the doctor checks whether it is suitable for you: medical history, medication and any lab values. The infusion costs CHF 300; basic insurance does not cover it.

When an infusion does not make sense

With ongoing tiredness without a known cause, a Medical Consultation comes first, not an infusion. The same applies if an underlying condition has not been investigated or another treatment should take priority. We do not see infusions as a wellness offering but as a medical procedure.

How it works in our practice

After the suitability check, the infusion takes about 30 to 60 minutes under medical supervision. More on process and cost on our Infusion Therapy page.

Targeted, not generic. The doctor checks beforehand whether an infusion is suitable for you. Not as a lifestyle product.
